Storybook Hike

Much of our programming involves promoting environmental education, so people can make positive, informed decisions about their relationship with nature. But the fact is, teaching can be a challenge when so many of our students struggle with the ability to read and write. Shockingly, California has the lowest literacy rates in the United States. That’s why we launched a Storybook Hike program!

Our Storybook Hike program provides an enchanting outdoor adventure that focuses on family connection, literacy, health and wellness, and environmental awareness. We select nature-themed stories that foster conservation stewardship and inspire everyone to explore more. Storybook pages are posted at several stations along a shaded loop trail at Crestridge Ecological Reserve in El Cajon, CA, and “turning the page” requires readers to hike to the next station, allowing everyone to enjoy a story as they take in the natural world around them.

Although the stories we feature are children’s books, the program has wide appeal for all ages. Seamlessly blending literacy, environmental literacy, physical fitness, and family bonding, we invite you to explore the natural world along with a world of imagination as you venture through the pages of our featured books. Each book is offered in English, Spanish, and Arabic, and we rotate in new stories twice per year. We hope to expand the program to additional locations throughout San Diego County.
