Volunteer Hero Appreciation
This past month, our wonderful volunteers have been helping water and up-pot Milkweed at our native Milkweed Farm! We also celebrated our volunteer heroes at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Day which started with a picnic at Balboa Park followed by a visit to the San Diego Natural History Museum. It was a great day enjoying each other's company and celebrating our amazing volunteers!
More Monarch Butterfly Garden Visits
This month, we wrapped up our first round of follow-up visits to the 17 Monarch Butterfly gardens installed this year. It was inspiring to see the success of our participants and we were glad to share two visits with funders from the Malk Nature Fund! We are endlessly grateful for their support.
The Kayaking Adventures Continue!
We had another fun day on the bay with 38 members of our community. When gusty 21-mile-per-hour winds tried to throw a curveball in our plans, we pivoted and took our East County participants on a guided hike through the newly-opened 39-acre Sweetwater Park, and then returned to the water when the winds calmed down. The new park is a nice, breezy open space, and free for the public to enjoy, so we recommend it! Back on the water, our participants kayaked and paddle boarded to their hearts' content, with help from our always-amazing partner, Chula Vista Water Sports.
One of the participants shared with us that they've always had a fear of water, but after the event they said, "I'm feeling courageous. I’m glad I conquered my fears and tried something new!" 100% of the participants who completed our survey (including the person afraid of water) said they plan to return again! Easing people into the outdoors, making them feel safe, welcomed, and inspired by nature, is at the very heart our mission. We’re deeply grateful to the California Coastal Conservancy’s Explore the Coast grant for making this event possible!
